Burnes, Byron B., 1951 - 1973
Scope and Contents
A two-page paper where Burnes tells his life story; it's marked "Written for my daughter, who used it for a paper she was writing in school, about 1950-51."
Half a dozen speeches/papers, mostly 5-8 pages long each, including:
- a speech given to the graduating class at the California School for the Deaf, 1969
- a paper titled "The Education of the Deaf," delivered at the Western Canada Association of the Deaf convention in Saskatchewan, 1951
- a paper titled "A Travesty on Education," undated
- a speech titled "The Deaf -- Their Organizations and Their Needs," given at the opening session of the Leadership Program at California State University, Northridge, 1962
- a paper titled "The Education of the Deaf," read at San Francisco State College's teacher training class, 1959
- another paper also titled "The Education of the Deaf," given at a sign language class at Westwood College, 1970
There is also a letter congratulating Burnes on being elected NAD president (1946), a letter congratulating him on the success of the NAD convention in Louisville (1946), and a press release touting his being reelected as NAD president (1949).
There are about 20 pages of newspaper clippings from roughly between 1946 and 1960, all concerned with Burnes's activities as president of the NAD -- announcing NAD conventions, giving statements on deaf education, that sort of thing.
Finally, there's also a collection of hand-drawn Christmas cards from between 1961 and 1975. These are accompanied by a 1979 letter from Burnes to Gallaudet librarian Carolyn Jones, mentioning that this is the only complete set of his cards that he knows of, although he still has the original drawings.
