Biographical / Historical
1874 Herbert Merrill was born in Waseca, Minnesota. 1881 Merrill became Deaf due to scarlet fever. 1881 He graduated from the Minnesota School for the Deaf. 1896 At Gallaudet College, Merrill was valedictorian for his class. 1896 For nineteen years Merrill worked for United States Weather Bureau as a meteorologist. 1897 Married to Miss Emma Vail, and from this union two daughters were born. 1904 Merrill received his Master’s of Art from Gallaudet College. 1912 During this year he was ordained as Deacon. 1915 Merrill was appointed missionary to Deaf in Diocese of Washington, D.C., Virginia, West Virginia. 1919 He was called a missionary in Albany, Central, Rochester, and Western New York. 1941 At Gallaudet College, he was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters. 1943 Merrill retired as Deacon. 1945 Reverend Herbert C. Merrill passed away on December 28th.
