Scope and Contents

The Irving Fusfeld Collection consists of correspondence, articles, and term papers. The bulk of this collection consists of approximately 160 pages, dating from 1922 to 1944. Dr. Fusfeld was a psychology and education professor at Gallaudet College and editor of the American Annals of the Deaf for 23 years from 1920 to 1943. The bulk of the collection consists of articles related to the American Annals of the Deaf, booklets, programs, newspaper clippings, a survey to schools for the deaf, and term papers written by his students.

Biographical / Historical

1883 Born on November 5th, in New York, N.Y. 1915-1916 Took the Normal Training course at Gallaudet College. 1916 Became a member of the college staff, and became an instructor until he eventually achieved the rank of professor in psychology and in education 1917-1918 Assistant editor of the American Annals of the Deaf. 1920-1943 Editor of the American Annals of the Deaf for 23 years. 1924-1925 Field investigator in a nation-wide survey of schools for the Deaf. Co-authored (with Dr. Rudolph Pintner) the Survey of American Schools for the Deaf. 1938 Appointed as the first director of the Gallaudet College Research Department. 1939 Appointed as the first dean of the Gallaudet College. 1946 Received an honorary doctorate from Gallaudet College. 1953 Appointed as Vice-President of Gallaudet College. 1955 Became a member of the White House Conference on Education. 1956 Selected “Man of the Year” by the Alpha Sigma Pi Fraternity, Gallaudet College Chapter. 1960 Served for several years as staff psychologist at the California School for the deaf in Berkeley. 1974 Vice-President Emeritus, conferred From Gallaudet College. 1977 Died on March 8 at his home in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
