Biographical / Historical

The Central Deaf Association was established in 1973 by Henry Johnson, the president of the San Diego Chapter of the California Association of the Deaf, at the request of city authorities. Johnson and a graduate student, Dean Santos, set out to establish a common link and head organization for the various agencies serving the Deaf in San Diego County. It was their mission to improve communication and cooperation amongst the various Deaf agencies as well as to fundraise, publish a newsletter, and improve public relations. In 1981, the Central Deaf Association changed its name to the Deaf Community Services of San Diego.
