Biographical / Historical
Ione Chapman Dibble was born on January 28, 1902, in Ansonia, Connecticut. She grew up in Massachusetts. The cause of her deafness is ambiguous: it is believed that she became deaf either at birth or from a bout of spinal meningitis. She started school at Clarke School for the Deaf in Massachusetts, where she attended for two years. Ione was then transferred to the American School for the Deaf at Hartford, Connecticut. She attended their oral classes for 12 years. She entered Gallaudet College in 1920 and left in 1923, never graduating. Dibble moved to Denver, Colorado, where she lived until she died in 1988.
