Scope and Contents

The collection of the Virginia Association of the Deaf consists of approximately 8,500 pages of correspondence, minutes, constitution and by-laws, financial reports, program books, brochures, directories, certificates, flyers, newspaper clippings, and photographs. The bulk of the collection dates from 1912 to 2001. The largest collections are correspondence files which span the years between 1934 and 1993 concerning the affairs of the organization. The collection contains newspaper clippings concerning the controversy of the selection of a superintendent of the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind. Also included in this collection are the files of the Virginia Council for the Deaf and the Auld Lang Syne Alumni Association of the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind.

Biographical / Historical

The Virginia Association of the Deaf was formed during the first meeting that was held in the old chapel of the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind in Staunton, Virginia, on June 11, 1884. John Walter Michaels, a deaf leader, was the founder and Rev. Job Turner, a deaf missionary, was the first president of the Virginia Association of the Deaf.
