 Collection — Multiple Containers
Identifier: MSS016

Scope and Contents

The Collection of Dr. Eugene D. Mindel consists of 3 boxes of manuscripts pertaining to his book They Grow in Silence published in 1987. Also included in the collection are 3 audio reels, 2 video tapes recorded/filmed during interviews with contributing authors. (Please see Gallaudet University Archives staff for assistance of the film and audio reels.)

The bulk of the collection is made up of manuscripts that range in date from approximately 1980 to 1986 and comprise of chapters submitted for approval, editorial notes, and re-edited drafts.

The strength of the collection is the volume of drafts and re-writes that were necessary to create the completed work of his book, depicting that it was a tireless effort. However, the chronology of drafts is unclear and only a few dates containing time of submission are present.

The largest subjects are essay submissions and editions that were published in They Grow in Silence: “The Impact of Deaf Children on Their Families” by Valerie Feldman; “The Primary Causes of Deafness” by McCay Vernon; “Audiology and the Hearing-Impaired Child: Current and Future Needs” by Noel Matkin; “Recent Advances in the Diagnosis of Hearing Loss in Newborns and Infants” by Laszlo K. Stein; “Emotional Illness and the Deaf” by Barbara Rayson; “Deaf Parents of Hearing Children” by Barbara Rayson; “Language and the Young Deaf Child” by Bonnie Litowitz; “After the Revolution: Educational Practice and the Deaf Child’s Communication Skills” by Rachel Mayberry; and “Deaf People and Work” by McCay Vernon. Eight other submitted and edited manuscripts are also included.

Three audio reels titled “‘The Deaf Child and his Family’ with Tom Woods, Dr. Eugene Mindel, Phyllis Dahlberg, and Arthur Nayer-Conversations at Chicago,” “‘They Grow in Silence’ Dr. Eugene Mindel talks about ‘The Deaf Child ‘ with Studs Terkel,” and “Studs Terkel with Dr. Mindel and Ralph Guertin discussing education for the Deaf” (1972) are included. One video tape with the titles “Act Your Age, Not Your Color,” “Sound of Vision,” and “If I run Into You, Don’t Hit Me” is in the collection.
