Scope and Contents

The bulk of these records contain meeting minutes and correspondence, both incoming and outgoing. Also included in the collection are planning documents related to the 1993 Rainbow Alliance of the Deaf's convention hosted by SCRSD, flyers for assorted events ranging from 1980 to the early 90s, publications of SCRSD and single issues of newsletters from other organizations, as well as the by-laws of the organization and surveys sent to members.

Of note, the survey file in series 7 has results of a survey sent out in 1996 that points to some reason for declining membership. Additionally, box 2 folder 6 contains a letter from the ACLU that briefly mentions the Rodney King incident.

Biographical / Historical

The Southern California Rainbow Society of the Deaf (SCRSD) was founded in 1976 at Bob Miller and Bob Wickham's home. It represented the Los Angeles area. The first president was Charles Fowler. In 1977, SCRSD became a member of the National Rainbow Society of the Deaf, now named the Rainbow Alliance of the Deaf. SCRSD was officially incorporated in 1988 and served as a representative on the Greater Los Angeles Council on Deafness' general meetings.

One of the main reasons for the establishment of SCRSD was because when the gay movement started gaining ground, deaf gays and lesbians felt left behind due to a lack of accessibliity and senstivity to the deaf community. The goals of SCRSD included providing a place for deaf LGBT fellowship, hosting events and parties, and providing workshops and referrals.

Membership of SCRSD varied with a 1989 fact sheet noting there were 96 members while another one from around 1991-1992 noted that over 15 years the organization has had 500 active and non-active members.

In 1993, SCRSD hosted the Rainbow Alliance of the Deaf Conference in Hollywood.

Sometime around 1996, a survey was given out at a meeting to try to pinpoint the cause of declining membership. It was mentioned that there weren't enough members attending meetings for a quorum for over a year at that point. By the 1997 RAD convention, the SCRSD was not mentioned as a chapter.
