Scope and Contents

The Guilbert Campbell Braddock collection consists of approximately 750 items and are dated from 1884-1983. The majority of the papers are dated from the 1930s and 1940s. The bulk of the collection consists of addresses, annual reports, articles, biographical information, correspondence, printed materials, obituaries, and issues of newsletters entitled “The Silent Churchman.”

The collection of annual reports are mostly from the Pennsylvania Diocesan Commission on Church Work Among Deaf-Mutes.

One can also find many articles about the ordainment of the Deaf clergy and also about their work in the Deaf community. There are several biographical manuscripts and notes about the work of hearing clergy including Utten Ellis Read, Frank Read, and Francis Joseph Clerc, the son of Laurent Clerc. Printed materials include publications from various church groups, deaf associations and schools. The Guilbert Campbell Braddock collection is arranged alphabetically by subject. It forms part of the original collection donated by Rev. Otto Berg on October 19, 1988.

Biographical / Historical

Guilbert C. Braddock was born on January 15, 1897 in Manistee, Michigan. From 1906-1912, he attended the Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind. IN 1913, He was admitted to Gallaudet College where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1918. Braddock went on to study at the General Theological Seminary and was ordained in 1926. His first post was as vicar of St. Ann’s Church for the Deaf in New York. In 1945, he embarked on missionary work in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington that continued until 1951. During this time, he received his Master of Arts degree in 1947. He became Vicar of All Souls’ Church for the Deaf in Philadelphia in 1951 and stayed at this post until 1968. He retired in 1968 and died four years later on August 31, 1972 at age of 75.
