The Anthony Hajna collection consists of his work as a bacteriologist. The collection includes articles he wrote, certificates, clippings about his life and work, letters including several from Irving S. Fusfeld, Gallaudet College Vice-President, literature from the Laboratory Digest, and reports.

Biographical / Historical
Anthony Alphonse Hajna was born on March 21, 1907 in Chicopee, Massachusetts. In 1915, he attended Mystic Oral School for the Deaf in Mystic, Connecticut and graduated in 1925.
Anthony Hajna was admitted to Gallaudet College in 1925 and received a B.S. degree in 1930. Following the autumn of 1930, he entered the school of Hygiene and Public Health of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, as a special student in the Department of Bacteriology and received a M.S. Degree in 1932.
In February of 1932, he worked as an assistant bacteriologist to the State Board of Health of Maryland and he worked there for 17 years, in 1949, he accepted an offer from Vermont State Board of Health to come to Burlington to train workers in the state laboratories for two years. After this, he returned to Indianapolis at the Microbiology division of the Indiana State Board of Health in Indianapolis and he worked there for many years.
In 1961, he received a honorary doctor of letters degree.
While a resident of Baltimore, he was very active in the National Fraternal Society of the Deaf. He has served as President of the Indianapolis Chapter of the Gallaudet College Alumni Association. He was also elected President of the Indiana Association of the Deaf in 1965.
He wrote many articles in different periodicals of laboratory medicine and was on the editorial board of the Laboratory Digest, a bimonthly review of laboratory medicine literature.
