Scope and Contents

The Stephen Charles Baldwin Collection includes research projects and videotapes. The research project entitled “The 1955 Gallaudet College Student Production of “Macbeth” is a research paper written by Stephen C. Baldwin for a drama course taken at the University of Texas at Austin in 1985.

The project describes the dramatics of deaf people at Gallaudet. The collection also includes a short videotape of Gallaudet’s production of “Macbeth” in 1955 (length:10 minutes).

Biographical / Historical

On March 2, 1944 in Boston, Massachusetts, Stephen Charles Baldwin was born. In 1950, he was deafened by a case of the Mumps. Baldwin attended Charleston High School in Boston from 1961-1964. After high school, he participated in the 1965 World Games for the Deaf Olympian in Helsinki, Finland.

In 1968, Gallaudet awarded him a Bachelor of Arts degree in Early American History. He became a teacher at St. John’s School for the Deaf in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He participated again in the 1969 World Games for the Deaf Olympian in Belgrade, Yugoslavia.

In 1973, he earned a Master degree in Education of Deaf and Rehabilitation from California State University at Northridge. He then became the curriculum coordinator and Vice President at the Utah School for the Deaf in Ogden, Utah. In 1979, he became the head teacher of a mainstreaming program for deaf and hard of hearing students at Bristol-Plymouth Regional Vocational Technical School in Taunton, Massachusetts.

He became a playwright, and produced different plays for the deaf, especially in Texas. By 1980, he was division director and instructor of drama, English, and government at Southwest Collegiate Institute of the Deaf in Austin, Texas.
