Biographical / Historical
The National Defense Education Act (NDEA) was passed by the federal legislation in 1958 providing funding in the United States for all levels, public and private. NDEA was established with the goal of advancing education in science, mathematics, and modern foreign languages. NDEA offered federal support for improvement in elementary and secondary education. In 1965, four institutes at Gallaudet were offered to qualified teachers of the deaf and librarians to expand their training. The institutes that were held included mathematics, science, reading and library science. In 1966, the NDEA Institute in school library services for the Deaf offered another summer seminar course. The goal of the institutes was to advance the quality of training in order to increase the output of students into these fields.
